Alexander Wang – Behavioural Scientist?

Nothing can prepare you for the horror show that is Alexander Wang's recent publicity stunt, where he gives away free clothes to a group of unassuming New York City fans.

It's almost as if you're watching a short documentary on human behaviour, or a social experiment attempting to embarrass or enlighten the public. I was convinced it had to be a staged promo video, that there was no way these people could have naturally reacted in such a disgraceful manner. However after reading the film credits and various reviews it seems the footage is indeed 100% genuine, and when it comes to free stuff, people can turn into real animals. Check it out here.

I loved Vogue Australia's response, admitting it was "a bit scary", and adding "Vogue does not advocate this type of behaviour when it comes to clothes. Ever." And they're right, if you truly loved clothing (and/or Alexander Wang), you wouldn't just morph into a mindless monster, desperately grabbing at any item, regardless of size or style, just because it was free! Or would you? A woman who claimed to be at the event, posted the following comment on Youtube, "One girl pulled my hair, another tried to rip my shirt. And you can't tell me you wouldn't be exactly the same for free stuff!!!!" Well no, I'd like to think I have a little more dignity than that.

Wang released a statement after the event, saying he liked the idea of creating a destination that was unknown, mysterious, and fun, where people can connect.... So when he says connect, did he mean fists with flesh?

This film, whether real or staged, scary or hilarious, was designed for one thing. To go viral. Let's not get warm and fuzzy about it.
